Ahead of The Metropole Hotel’s 124th birthday , we caught up with Ann & Michael Mulcahy, who have been the youngest couple to ever get married at The Metropole Hotel! Anne, who was 17, and Michael, who was 19, at their wedding back in 1980, sat down with our Wedding Club coordinator Gavin Farmer to chat about how they were able to blossom their young love to endless love. How long are you married?
Anne: 41 years in July! We were planning on renewing their vows in 2020 but of course the pandemic prevented that from celebrating this special occasion, but really hoping to come back soon!
Where did you meet?
Michael: The Arcadia, however, it took me a week to pluck up the courage to approach Ann.
What date did you get married?
22nd July 1980
Why did you choose the Metropole Hotel?
Anne – The Metropole Hotel had an amazing reputation for weddings. It was the place to get married and a central location for everyone to attend. The service and food were amazing.
Michael – I have great memories looking out from the Shandon room over at Merchants Quay.
Best memory from your wedding day?
Michael – My favourite memory of the day was seeing Ann walk up the aisle with her dad also my own wedding was the first wedding I ever attended, and it was overwhelming the atmosphere and the people
What’s the secret to a happy marriage?
Michael – Agree with the wife and have selective hearing, the wife is the engine room of every Marriage.
Ann- Work hard on the marriage, have patience, and think back to why you got married in the first place.
If you could give one tip to couples just starting out in their relationship?
Ann – Don’t live in the past you’ve already been there, live in the present and enjoy every moment.
