How it all began...
The history of the Jazz Festival in Cork
The Cork Jazz Festival was founded in 1978 at The Metropole Hotel in Cork. Our then Marketing Manager Jim Mountjoy conceived the notion of a jazz festival to bring life to the hotel on a quiet October Bank Holiday weekend. The first Jazz Festival was held here at our hotel and with acts in the Opera House and Everyman Theatre. Tickets were one pound and fifty pence and the festival was sponsored by John Player. The Metropole hosted jazz greats including Ella Fitzgerald, Ronnie Scott and Herbie Hancock. Fast forward to 1982 when Guinness replaced John Player as the sponsor and extended to over 100 concerts and the introducing the Guinness Jazz Trail which saw 15 city centre pubs and venues engage for the first time. Now, years later, the Jazz Festival brings over 40,000 visitors to Cork every year. The Metropole Hotel is still the home of Jazz in Cork and our sell-out Jazz Festival Club is the place to be for the long weekend.
