First of all – congratulations!

Getting engaged is such a special milestone, and whether you’ve been dreaming about your wedding day for years or are only beginning to think about it now, it is the start of an incredibly exciting journey.

One of the very first and most important decisions you’ll make is choosing your wedding venue. It often sets the tone for everything that follows – from your wedding date and guest list to your décor, photography and overall experience.

Having worked with countless couples over the years, one thing I’ve learned is that every wedding is completely unique. No two couples are the same, and your venue should reflect who you are and the celebration you want to create together.

At The Metropole Hotel, we’ve had the privilege of helping couples celebrate one of the happiest days of their lives for generations. As we celebrate 129 years in the heart of Cork City, it’s something we never take for granted. For well over a century, families have gathered here to celebrate love, create memories and begin new chapters together. That legacy is incredibly special to us, and it’s why I’m so passionate about making every couple’s journey as relaxed, enjoyable and stress-free as possible.

If you’re just starting your search, here are my top five tips.

1. Start with the experience you want

Before looking at brochures or menus, think about how you want your wedding to feel.

Do you picture timeless elegance? A vibrant city celebration? An intimate gathering with your closest family and friends? Or a larger celebration where everyone you love can be together?

When you know the atmosphere you’re hoping to create, it becomes much easier to find a venue that feels like the perfect fit.

2. Have a rough idea of your guest numbers

You don’t need an exact seating plan at this stage, but having a realistic estimate of your guest list makes a huge difference.

Your numbers will influence everything from the room you’ll need, to your budget and the overall flow of the day. A venue should feel comfortably full – not too large for a smaller celebration or too restricted for a bigger one.

3. Think beyond the reception

Many couples now look for venues that can host more than just the evening celebration.

Having your civil ceremony, drinks reception, wedding meal and evening celebrations all under one roof can make the day much more relaxed for both you and your guests. It also removes much of the travel and logistics, allowing everyone to simply enjoy the occasion.

4. Choose people you trust

Planning a wedding should be exciting – not overwhelming.

When you’re visiting venues, pay attention to the people as much as the surroundings. Do they listen? Do they understand your vision? Do they make you feel comfortable?

Your wedding team will become part of one of the biggest days of your life, so choosing experienced people who genuinely care makes all the difference.

5. Trust your instincts

Sometimes, you simply know.

There are venues that tick every practical box, and then there are venues that instantly feel right. If somewhere gives you that feeling the moment you walk through the doors, don’t ignore it.

Your wedding should feel like an extension of your story, and the right venue should make you excited every time you imagine your day there.
