A Spooktacular Cork City Break: Halloween for Grown-Ups
Who says Halloween is just for children?
From atmospheric night-time adventures and Cork’s spectacular Dragon of Shandon to pumpkin picking, ghostly tales and cosy evenings over wine and charcuterie, Halloween is a brilliant time for a couples’ escape or girls’ getaway to Cork.
And with The Metropole Hotel right in the heart of Cork’s Victorian Quarter, you can check in, leave the car behind and make a weekend of it.
Here are some of our favourite ways to enjoy a grown-up Halloween in Cork this year.
See the Dragon of Shandon Take Over Cork City
If there is one event worth planning a Halloween break in Cork around, it has to be the Dragon of Shandon.
On Saturday 31st October 2026, the spectacular 36-foot Dragon will emerge once again, accompanied by ghouls, beasts, misfits and other spooky creatures for one of Cork’s most atmospheric nights of the year. Beginning at 7pm in Shandon, the parade celebrates the ancient Irish tradition of Samhain as it makes its way through the streets of the city.
Even better, 2026 marks the 20th anniversary of this much-loved Cork tradition, with Cork Community Art Link planning an extended programme of events around the milestone.
Think lanterns, costumes, music, historic streets and plenty of photo opportunities. It is the perfect start to Halloween night before heading for drinks in the city.

Brave Spike Island After Dark
For those who prefer their Halloween experiences a little darker, Spike Island After Dark presents Conviction, a spine-chilling experience created exclusively for adults. Take the ferry across Cork Harbour before exploring the eerie corridors of the island’s former prison and venturing into dark underground tunnels once used for solitary confinement.
Renowned mentalist and escape artist Dean Jacob brings the experience to life with a brand-new show for 2026, combining mind-bending illusions, thrilling escapes and plenty of suspense along the way. Strictly for over-18s, Spike Island After Dark runs on Fridays and Saturdays throughout October, with additional dates every night from 24th to 31st October – perfect for anyone looking to add something genuinely spooky to an autumn escape in Cork.

Take a Cork Ghost Tour
You might walk through Cork’s streets every day, but they feel very different when someone starts telling you the stories behind them.
Cork Ghost Tour offers a one-hour walking tour designed to “fright and delight”, beginning and ending outside Cork Opera House on Emmet Place. Halloween dates for 2026 are due to be announced, so this is one to keep an eye on as October approaches.
It’s particularly handy for guests staying at The Metropole – you’re already in the heart of the city, so you can head out for your ghost tour before returning for a cocktail afterwards.

Go Pumpkin Picking – Yes, Grown-Ups Can Do It Too
We are absolutely not leaving pumpkin picking to the children.
For the ultimate autumn photo opportunity, pull on the boots, grab your favourite people and head for a pumpkin patch.
Ovens Pumpkin Patch Cork – Pumpkin Picking & Halloween Farm is returning for Halloween 2026, with live pumpkin vines, rustic trails, seasonal photo spots, pumpkin picking and autumn treats. It’s only around 15 minutes from Cork city, making it an easy addition to a city break.
Alternatively, head east to Joe’s Farm in Killeagh. Adults can purchase a picker ticket, explore the working farm, pick vegetables and choose their own pumpkin to bring home. Their 2026 pumpkin-picking dates run across weekends in October, as well as 26th and 27th October.
Bring the wellies, embrace the autumn weather and make sure someone is on camera duty.

Step Inside Cork City Gaol
For a little history with your Halloween atmosphere, spend an afternoon exploring Cork City Gaol.
The castle-like former prison dates from the 19th century, and visitors can wander its wings and cells while discovering the stories of the people once imprisoned there. It is open daily during October from 10am to 5pm, with both self-guided and guided options available.
Groups looking for something extra can also arrange a private evening tour outside normal opening hours, with exclusive access to the Gaol and the option of adding a Prosecco reception.
Atmospheric old stone corridors at Halloween? We couldn’t resist.
