NOTE FROM FOUR LABOURERS DISCOVERED AFTER 56 YEARS IN HOTEL WALL AND THE SEARCH IS ON TO FIND THEM……

The Metropole Hotel in Cork city has launched a search for four labourers who were working at the hotel in 1969 and wrote their names on a piece of paper which has been discovered in the bricks of the lobby. 

The note is dated July 1969 and the hotel is hoping to find the four men and welcome them back to the hotel.

The four names are:

Tommy Ross – Electrician

Jerry Higgins – Carpenter

Steve Casey – Painter

John Keogh – Plumber

They were inscribed on an old piece of wallpaper with a message “with love from” and it was placed in the wall of the hotel, which is located on McCurtain Street in the Victorian Quarter area of the city.

The note was discovered when a wall in the lobby was demolished during the current ground floor refurbishment at the hotel and it was brought to the attention of the hotel’s team members. They are putting out a call to see if they can track down the four men and are calling on the public to help in the search. They are inviting them to come to the hotel to see the new lobby and restaurant once it opens soon and to hear their stories of working at the hotel in 1969.

Louise McNamara, General Manager, of the Metropole Hotel said: “The Metropole Hotel has been a very important part of the Victorian Quarter’s history and culture since it first opened its doors 127 years ago and we love to hear stories from the past about who visited here or who worked here. It would be really exciting to hear the stories of the electrician, plumber, painter and carpenter who obviously worked on the lobby in 1969 and to see what they think of the refurb 56 years later.”
