Charity of Choice
for 2019 is Enable Ireland
Enable Ireland was founded back in 1951 to provide services to children and adults with disabilities. Today they operate from 40 different locations in 14 counties all around Ireland. (Cork, Clare, Cavan, Dublin, Galway, Kerry, Kildare, Kilkenny, Limerick, Mayo, Meath, Monaghan, Tipperary and Wicklow). Each Enable Ireland service is contracted by the HSE to provide their services.
Support is not just given to the individual with the disability but also their families, parents and guardians. They provide services such as clinical assessment, therapy, education, training, residential, respite, PA and family support.
In Cork, Enable Ireland provides both children and adult services.
The children’s service supports over 600 children and their families living in Cork city and county. Their interdisciplinary offer assessments, early year’s intervention and education, training and support services, child and adolescence services and respite to children with a primary physical disability who need an ongoing team based intervention. In addition to these core service Enable Ireland offers the following specialist clinical services which children can access by referral from their primary team:
· Feeding, Eating, Drinking and Swallowing
· Assistive Technology
· Spasticity and Tone Management
· Upper Limb Assessment Clinic
· Orthopaedic Clinic
· Hip and Spinal Surveillance
· Prosthetics and Orthoses
· Gait Analysis
For their adult services, Enable Ireland works with the person, helping them to access additional supports in their community and promoting valued roles for them within it. They do this by providing services within the community and not in isolation from it. Services provided include personal assistants, advocacy development, supported employment, mainstream education and training, and support during transition to adulthood from children’s services. Outcomes are measured by quality of life as determined by the service user.
